First celebrated in the UK in October 1987, this year’s Black History Month is now in full swing. There’s plenty of enriching TV shows, radio programs, podcasts and events scheduled throughout this month. Sainsbury’s are the first national supermarket to get behind the month and Royal Mail has painted four of its post boxes – in London, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast – black. Each post box contains a QR code which when scanned brings up a list of black Britons who are featured on special stamps. The closest postbox is in Cardiff and features Mary Seacole, a Jamaican-born nurse who cared for wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War.

So as part of celebrating Bristol’s Black icons, BeOnBoard are pleased to share another infographic from Bristol’s Race for Inclusive Leadership series. This week we are super-honoured to be celebrating Roy Hackett who led on the Bristol Bus Boycott, co-founded St Pauls Festival (now Carnival) and more recently was awarded an MBE on the 2020 Queens Honours List.
